ALPI Sottsass Dark Brown Veneers — Design by Ettore Sottsass and Federico Cedrone
The ALPI Sottsass Dark Brown veneers are a new shade of the project created by Ettore Sottsass for ALPI in the 1980s, first used in the Memphis collection. They emphasize the wood grain texture and highlight its deepest tones, suggesting unusual combinations in the designer’s distinctive style.
ALPI Sottsass woods draw their colors from natural woods, enhancing their value and showcasing their texture through distinctive striping, evoking the unconventional and provocative combinations characteristic of the creator’s design language.
Light, material, and color come together in the vision and design philosophy of Ettore Sottsass to create dynamic connections between visual art and design, introducing a potentially endless range of possibilities and a design language that perfectly defines this collection created for ALPI.
The new shade is the result of work carried out by ALPI’s Research & Development department, based on Sottsass’s original project retrieved from the archive. The document included a Pantone color palette accompanied by several handwritten notes by the designer.
Using these notes as a starting point, ALPI Sottsass Dark Brown was developed — a new shade of brown. The first Memphis collection already featured a brown tone; now, thanks to ALPI’s wood-dyeing techniques and the research conducted by its R&D department, a new refined version of this shade has been created, while preserving the iconic pattern that characterizes the entire Sottsass veneer collection, first introduced in the 1985 Memphis collection.
